About New Urban

New Urban is a real estate development firm focused on urban revitalization projects. Our main areas of expertise are acquisition, redevelopment and management of urban real estate including commercial, office, residential, and hotel projects.
New Urban also develops shared equity attainable housing in partnership with INHOUSE Society, a non-profit organization that provides a unique shared equity home ownership program for moderate income earners. We bridge the gap between the rental and sale market and help provide affordable housing options in high-cost metropolitan centres.
New Urban’s management team has considerable experience in all facets of property development with an emphasis on comprehensive mixed-use projects. We provide effective and strategic plans that deliver visionary, marketable, and sustainable developments. Working closely with our development and community partners, we analyze financial and economic factors, evaluate potential obstacles, and provide an achievable approach to solving real estate challenges.
New Urban's current projects total 31.5 acres, valued at over $430 million. (for a PDF map of our land holdings please click here)
History of New Urban

Dan Van Leeuwen, President and CEO, founded New Urban in 2008, based on the foundation of skills developed through his previous work experience. His entrepreneurial spirit and expertise in real estate development provided the platform to establish his own vision for innovative development opportunities.
During his tenure as President of Torode Commercial, Dan was involved in the acquisition, site selection and creative vision for Calgary’s inner-city. Acquisitions and developments included 8 West office building, Hotel Arts expansion and renovation, Curtis Block development plan and Ramsay Exchange.
Dan’s residential experience comes from his time as Vice President of Apex Multifamily, a division of the Apex Group of Companies. His direct responsibilities included the Renaissance at North Hill, West 69th Condominiums, the National Hotel project and Union Square.
Dan spent ten years in the California and Nevada real estate market working with Forest City Enterprises, a $12 billion, publicly traded real estate development firm. Dan was Vice President of West Coast development responsible for the Westfield San Francisco Center, the largest mixed-used heritage redevelopment project in the Western United States. At Forest City Dan completed several significant projects including the Galleria at Sunset, a 1.2 million square foot shopping mall and the Showcase, a retail entertainment complex on the Las Vegas Strip. In addition to projects in San Francisco Dan completed many projects in Los Angeles, Denver and San Jose.

In the Community

We believe in being part of the communities we develop in.
INHOUSE Society - New Urban is committed to playing a significant role in the affordable housing solution. We established INHOUSE Society, a not-for-profit organization that allows us to sell market quality homes at below market rates to qualified purchasers. Utilizing our registered Shared Equity Lender Financing (S.E.L.F.) model, INHOUSE helps bridge the gap between the rental and home ownership markets.
Urban Food Forest - In August 2013, together with the Leaf Ninjas, we embarked on a unique urban food forest project in Ramsay. With the New Urban offices located in this inner-city community, we have a desire to facilitate and participate in neighbourhood events. The heart of this initiative is an urban food forest which grows shrubs, plants, flowers and trees; all of which are edible. Our intent with this initiative is to provide employees, visitors and guests a beautiful oasis to enjoy in the middle of an urban setting as well as the ability to enjoy the food bounty.

On May 14, 2014 students from Janus Academy had a little field trip out to our food forest and planted all of the planters with a selection of different greens and herbs. Thank you to all the students and we look forward to making fresh salads all summer long! Click here to see some photos from this event.
On May 24, 2014 we hosted a community planting day and had 15 volunteers fill in our food forest with a variety of berries, shrubs and plants. We also all learned a tremendous amount of valuable information from the Leaf Ninjas during the day. To view pictures from this day click here. We invite you to visit our food forest and when things are ready for harvesting please enjoy any of the bounty.

PASSAGE Art Space - We are excited about our newest initiative PASSAGE, a public art space to support, promote and celebrate Calgary artists and to welcome and engage the community in an evolving historic space. PASSAGE is located in a corridor of the heritage Dominion Bridge building. Exhibitions in PASSAGE will be presented as a series of temporary displays and are professionally curated by Colleen Sharpe.
PASSAGE is open to the public 7 days a week from 8am to 7pm.
The premiere exhibit in PASSAGE was IN DUST: REAL and ran February 13 to May 15, 2014. The exhibit featured contemporary artists Aran McCormick and Joanne MacDonald and honoured the heritage of the Dominion Bridge site as an important industrial location in the growth of Calgary.
The second exhibit Digital Cave ran June 5 to September 14, 2014 and featured the work of Calgary's Studio Cartel.
New Urban has partnered with the Burns Visual Arts Society to commemorate their 35th Anniversary through an exhibition titled Still Burning. As Canada's longest running art collective, the BVAS has supported the creation of an astonishing amount of artwork and has illuminated thousands of lives through connections between artists, students and the public. Help celebrate this amazing milestone and view a myriad of different artworks by 20 current BVAS artists. Still Burning runs September 18, 2014 through January 15, 2015.
